Get the Napalm Gun

In the first level go strait to the boss don't shoot anything and hold L, R and up. Let go in the second level and you will have the strongest gun in the game, the Napalm Gun.

Nine continues

At the beginning on the title screen hold L, and R. Then press Start 5 times and you will have nine continues.

Six continues

On the Title Screen, hold Up, L, and R, then press Start. When you are defeated you should have six continues instead of three.
