To earn a continue, "meet the enemy and descend" and kill the enemy 
Bionic soldier. He will leave you an eagle. Each eagle gives you a continue. 


Find the helmet

To interrogate the enemy soldier and find the secret path that contains 
the helmet, use your arm to get behind him. It freaks him out. 


Play Area 4 in the dark

To play Area 4 in the dark, don't use flares in area for a modest 
but interesting challenge. 


Move around as the enemy computer is being destroyed

To move around as the enemy computer is being destroyed, instead of 
being frozen in victory, a very hard thing to do, you have to fire the last 
shot to kill it, then get the computer off the screen before the shot hits 
the computer. This should only be attempted by those who fancy 
themselves masters of the game.


Earn all of the life points

A really good place to earn all the life points is at the end of level one. 
Before you go into the bosses chamber stay outside and kill all the
paratroopers. You'll have full life in about twenty minutes


Use the rocket launcher in Level 7-1

If you're like me, you like to use the rocket launcher, now in level 7, I 
think, you can't use the rocket launcher on the wall, you have to use the 
3-way, destroy the wall, then hit A, B, and start at the same time to 
get out of the level, descend into the level again, switch to rocket 
launcher when you're choosing your weapons, and you can go through the 
level with the rocket launcher, (if you don't know how to beat the big 
robot at the end, the rocket launcher really takes care of the computer 
a lot quicker than the 3-way).


Communicators

Communicators: Use the red one in Areas 1, 4 and 5, the green one in 2, 3 
and 6, the blue one in 8, 9 and 7, and the brown one in 10, 11 and 12.

The order I mentioned the Areas in above is the best order to play them 
in (1, 4, 5, 2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 7, 10, 11, 12 excluding the neutral areas).


Find the secret tunnels

To find where the secret tunnels are on the area map, talk to the prisoner 
in Area 17. You have to actually touch him to get any info from him. You'll 
find the Helmet in one of the tunnels.


Fighting Giants

Fighting Giants (Areas 6, 7 and 12): Hang from a ledge above you at a 
safe distance. When he's in range, drop and hit him on the way down. Use 
the Rocket Launcher for best results (It only takes 4 hits, if I remember).


Exit an area

To exit an area, simultaneously press and hold A, B and Start. You 
will go back to the Descend/Transfer screen to select a different area.
