Go through the wall

Sent in by Black Spy Go to the battle course called "Block Fort". Be sure that you have it set to two player mode. Both characters chosen should be heavyweight (Wario, Bowser, DK). Have one player not do ANYTHING. The other player should just accelerate. Do not steer at all. Get a turbo boost by pressing A between the 2nd and 3rd lights. Continue holding A until the other player is against the wall. Keep holding A. The non-moving player should now be bouncing between the other player and the wall. Now let go of A. The still player will go through the wall! This also works with "Double Decker".

Outsmarting the AI characters

Sent in by K7 1. Unlike almost all racing games the AIs in MK64 tailor themselves to the situation of the human player. Here are some things you should know to improve your skills of beating the computer- A. Don't let your guard down! The AIs can move at speeds faster than you are capable- if they feel you are winning unfairly. If you take major shortcuts, don't play the rest of the course arrogantly. They WILL catch up no matter what you do. They a re programmed not to pass you unless you screw up, though. B. If you get behind, do not panic. The AIs almost always slow down when you get behind. The farther away from first you are, the slower they go. 2. AIs and items- A. AIs in the 5th to 8th positions get the best items of all the AIs. Keep an eye on them. B. AIs cannot use shells or super mushrooms, and their ghosts cannot take your items. C. AIs do not use mushrooms or bananas strategically. They use them randomly. 3. Other helpful facts- A. AIs ALWAYS go over the very center of hills. Place a banana or box there and they won't even try to avoid it. B. You can't always count on it, but AIs tend to follow in your tracks. If you come dangerously close to hitting an obstacle, they might follow your basic route and plow right through what you missed. C. If you are being tailgated, use the stereo sound to get an idea of where they are and creme them with a backwards-shot shell or banana.

Bounce really high

Sent in by Eric "wiggy" Wigdahl at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! This is for fun. On Royal Raceway, hold R most of the time in the air on the ramp, but not while you're on the ramp! You should hold R till you land. You should bounce really high! On Rainbow road on the first hill press R at the top. I call it the "forever" jump!

Bowsers castle tip

Sent in by Ben Prince In Bowsers castle when you are in the part with the stones go to the right or left of the red path and you should not get hit by any of the stones.

Kalimari Desert train tip

Sent in by ToastBoyX In time trials in the Kalimari Desert, you will not be stopped by the train if you use this method: 1) Run through the course one time using powerslides, mini-turbo, and by jumping over the tracks(yes, they slow you down) Do NOT use any of your mushrooms or run off of the track. 2) Just as you come to the finish line, there is a small bump just to the left. Use your 1st mushroom and hit it. You will be flung ahead pretty far and your speed will be pretty fast for about 3 seconds. 3) As you reach the first set of tracks on your second lap, you should see the train going by. Use your 2nd mushroom to zoom over the tracks behind it. 4) Power turn the turn to the right and you should see the train a-coming. 5) Stay on the road and then quickly turn right and hit the third mushroom. 6) Go over the bit of tracks without railing to the right and, if you timed it right, you will slide right in front of the train, taking about 5 seconds off of your time.

Short outburst of speed

Sent in by Michael When driving, if you can get directly behind a racer for a short time, you'll see air come off of both sides of your kart (like when you go off a ramp), and you'll get a short outburst of speed, not much, but enough to pass whomever is in front of you.

Sky Scraper tip

Sent in by Renegade at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! In battle at the "Sky Scraper", when you start, do the turbo boost and you'll get a item box and you'll jump right over the hole in the middle.

Guide on how to get the best times for some of the level's

Sent in by Elyot Luigi Raceway: The trick to winning this one is sliding around every corner. If you are good at sliding, you can slide the whole way around both major corners. Since these corners are big, you can use the mini turbo multiple times on each one. Koopa Troopa Beach: If you get a mushroom you can use it to blast yourself into the cave near the fifth ramp. You can go from eighth to first using this shortcut but it takes a lot of practice. Also, after the first ramp, you can go to the right of the archway. You will come to a sand bar that you can drive across. You can save almost as much time as the shortcut listed above but watch out for crabs! Also at the part with the palm trees, you can drive to the right of the large rock and will not smash into any trees. If you have a mushroom once you have reached this area, you can use it once you are at the top of the large ramp to skip the rock altogether. There is an item box up there. This item box will always give you a spiny`s shell. Toad`s Turnpike: If you have a super star or a boo you can go through the trucks! this is extremely helpful on extra mode. Frappe Snowland: A good tip for this course is to never slide. It will cause you to spin out almost every time. At the part with the many snowmen, you can go to the right of the giant one and skip all of the little ones. Choco Mountain: On 100cc, 150cc,or extra mode, you can use a thunder bolt to whoop your opponents. Right after the part with the boulders, there is a sharp turn to the right. If you drive off of the course here you will end up on the road just before the boulders. If you zap your opponents at this corner they will fall off the course. (Don`t forget that there is a spin out associated with the thunder bolt.) Mario Raceway: The best shortcut that I know for this course is to leap over the center wall. At the fourth corner in this course(the one before the one with the giant mushroom), there is a slight bump. Drive your kart up the hill on the left side of this course and use a mushroom on the way down. Jump when you hit the bump. This will send you flying. If you are lucky enough, you will have jumped over the center wall. This trick is very, very hard to do. Wario Stadium: At the fourth bump in this course you can jump over the wall to your left if you have a mushroom. If you jump just when you hit the peak of the bump. You can also whoop your opponents by zapping them with the thunder bolt just before they hit the jump. Sherbert Land: In this course, you can shave off seconds by jumping or sliding over corners but be warned, you will be frozen for a short while if you fall in. Royal Raceway: At the ramp with the turbo boosts, you can shoot slightly to the left to land near the item boxes there. Don`t worry if you smash into the dirt near the road and roll in. Lakitu will place you back on the course where you could have landed.
Sent in by Nathan To get 1 minute and 30 seconds in Mario Raceway, do a power slide on every turn and do the same thing on every other raceway like 1 minute and 51 seconds in Luigi Race Way, or 2 minutes and 30 seconds in Royal Raceway if you do this you might make it. Also, don't go off the road.

See the boats in the distance

Sent in by Steven Garcia There are boats in the water at Koopa Beach. At the starting line. go around the first corner and head to where you can see green at the top of the hill. Go straight for it, jump on the mountain and hold forward with the gas and brakes on, keep pushing the jump button. Once your at the top you can see the boats in the distance. It's easier to get to the top if you have speed. It's not much but it is fun to see something different.

Jump over racers

Sent in by Riddler at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! After you get the super start at the begging of the race and come close to the guy in front of you, you press R and you can jump over him and other racers. If you do it right you will hurdle your self VERY far! Don't do it to Bowser or you will whip out.

Item tip

Sent in by Andrew The type of item you get is almost directly related to the position you're in. If you are in eighth place, you will tend to get stars, thunder bolts, spiny shells, super mushrooms, and triple red shells. In 7th through 5th place, you'll sometimes get stars, sometimes thunder bolts, a few shells, maybe get a super mushroom or two, and will probably get a couple of spiny shells. In fourth and third place, you will get more shells, bananas, triple mushrooms, and bombs, almost never get special items, and will get your share of ghosts. In first and second place, your item of choice will usually be the banana, green shell, mushroom, or bomb. It makes no sense to be 8th and get a banana so that you can get the person behind you, right? If you're first you would have no one to hit if you had a star, so what are you're chances of getting one?

Train trick

Sent in by Robbie In the desert, when you see the train, go past it a use a Lightning bolt and your opponents will hit the train!

Sharp turn tip

Sent in by jmaster@hotmail.com If you can't get the hang of the mini turbo or just want do something that is just as effective then you should try the jump around turn trick. when you come to a sharp turn and can hardly make it around it using the slide, you can jump jump jump and not loose any speed by doing so you can take sharper turns and it is usually as effective as the mini turbo. If you use it correctly you should be able to beat course's that you though were impossible. using this to the full extent you should only drive straight and not turn normal and loose speed.

Acceleration trick

Sent in by Joe Bjegovich at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! This trick is very tricky and it can only be done on time trail. 1# Start sliding as usual (like on a sharp turn). When your sliding if your watching the smoke close enough you can see either the letters E or V formed of smoke 2# Next, as you slide steer in the opposite direction of your turn, then quickly steer back in you original direction. If you succeed the smokes color will change yellow. 3# Repeat the same operation and, if you once again succeed the smokes color will change red heres how, while doing this you must rapidly keep pressing the A button (throttle) and the R button. It might be easy for some people if you can imagine constantly steering a car left and right (don't you think you would get a serious rush). 4# When the smoke turns red release the R button and your speed will increase (watch your speedometer) this acceleration trick is called the mini turbo. After steering in the opposite direction, the trick is to correctly return the steering to the original direction.

Secret screen

Sent in by Matthew Burge at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! For a secret screen, be in first place in special cup. (Uncertain about if you have to be in 150cc.) Then press L on the start screen. It had a weird picture on it

Go backwards

Sent in by Matthew Burge at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! To go backwards push the Joystick down and hold the B button.

Time Trial tips

Sent in by Matty Bear Go into the Time Trial mode and pick your player. Next, choose one of the levels below and get a time better than what is listed. Luigi Raceway - under 1'52"00 Mario Raceway - under 1'30"00 Royal Raceway - under 2'40"00 For example, if you get a time of 1'51"47 (which is under 1'52"00) on Luigi Raceway, then when you immediately retry after that, it will say, "NOW -- MEET THE COURSE GHOST!!!" You will then race against a ghost of Luigi. (On Mario Raceway, you'll race against Mario, and on Royal Raceway, you'll race against Peach.) Even after you turn off the power, you'll still be able to race against each course ghost without having to achieve the needed time again. The course ghosts are automatically saved to your cartridge so there's no need for a Controller Pak. Having trouble meeting those times? Make sure you understand and know how to do the "mini turbo boost" sliding technique. It involves holding down the R button to slide around a corner, and while you continue to hold down the button, you have to "steer" the joystick to the opposite direction and back. If you did that correctly, the smoke will change from white to yellow. Repeat the "steering" motion again, and the smoke should change from yellow to red. Once the smoke is red, let go of the R button. If you have your speedometer on-screen, you'll notice your speed go up for a few seconds. You'll need to repeat this technique around every almost corner (and sometimes you'll have to do it several times around one corner) to have a fighting chance.

Race against your ghost

Sent in by Sam Swainhart Go to the Luigi Circuit and race the course under 1 minute and 52 seconds (1:51). If you're able to do it you can then race against your ghost. What's even better is that the ghost is permanently saved into the game.

Lightning bolt tip

Sent in by Sam Swainhart If you get a lightning bolt on a level with a big jump in it. Use it right before your opponents, go over the jump. If you do it at the right time, they won't make the jump. Not only will you pass them up, but they will lose their position, possibly taking them from 1st place to 8th place.

See the top time for the tracks

Sent in by Sam Swainhart On the intro screen hold down A, B, L, R and it will show the Top Time for the tracks.

First place twice

Sent in by Code Hunter at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! On 3 or 4 players vs, you can enter twice on first place in the same race if you cross the goal line backwards. When you do so, the CPU will take control of the vehicle and will cross the goal line again. After the race is over, it will show two first places for the player who did that. It also works for the second place, but only in 4 players vs.

Instruction manual secret

Sent in by Code Hunter This cheat is not for the game, but it is something hidden in the Mario Kart 64 instruction manual! Turn to the pages with all the course maps, and look at the 3D picture of Wario Stadium (not the one that tells you where to go, but the really impressive 3D one). Now look in the top left corner, outside the stadium and into the distance. You should see, get this, the Skyscraper Battle Course! You can see it clearly, as it is tall, octagonal, and has those yellow numbers on it.

Drafting an opponent

Sent in by Code Hunter If you can't pass an opponent, try drafting him. Line your kart up behind another racer. You'll see wisps of air come off your kart and you'll speed up slightly. Not much, but enough to pass whomever you're following.

Super Mario 64 castle

Sent in by Code Hunter On the Royal Raceway after the big jump there will be a yellow road to the right. If you follow it, it will bring you to the Mario 64 castle.

Race the tracks in mirror mode

Sent in by Code Hunter To race the tracks in mirror mode, you must win a gold cup in all 150cc events.

Jump off the ramp without a power-up

Sent in by Code Hunter at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! At Noku Noku Beach you can make the jump off the ramp without a power-up. Just aim straight into the cave, use jump (the right shoulder button) make sure not to hit the walls, and jump right out from under the waterfall.

Donkey Jungle Park tips

Sent in by Code Hunter At Donkey Jungle Park, near the beginning of the race is a self-propelling ramp which sends your racer across a giant river. Instead of jumping straight off it, aim to the far left and you'll be ahead of the crowd by a few seconds. Second, this course is full of sharp turns. Use the mushroom power-ups as you pass across the jungle terrain and though you'll be hit by coconuts, you'll still end up farther ahead than if you didn't. Third, there is one cave on this course that disrupts many players because of its weird angles and hard-to-follow path. But look at the ground and there is a light-colored path, which makes it far easier to follow. Fourth, upon entering the cave, accelerate to the maximum and aim toward the steep slope. If your racer is going fast enough then pull a hard left powerslide and you'll slide right up the slope, thereby shaving a few seconds.

Character tips

Sent in by Code Hunter Mario and Luigi are very well balanced racer who don't have any major advantages or disadvantages. They're both good choices for beginning racers. Peach, Toad and Yoshi accelerate well and don't lose a lot of speed if you go into grass or sand. Their maximum speed is slightly faster than average because they are lighter racers. Their disadvantage is corners -- they can lose a lot of speed if you don't slide. Their other disadvantage is their light weight -- if they collide with a heavier racer, they'll crash for sure. Donkey Kong, Wario and Bowser turn corners well, even if you don't slide. Also, if they collide with another racer, regardless of size, they usually don't crash. While their heaviness is an advantage, it also has its drawbacks. They start out slow off of the Starting Line, and take a while to reach top speed. Since they are heavier racers, their tires will sink into the grass or sand if they go off-road, causing them to lose a lot of speed.
Sent in by Shawn at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! When being Toad, Princess, or Yoshi, anybody like Wario, Bowser, or Donkey Kong, don't move too fast when there spinning, or still, or your character (Toad, Yoshi, or Princess) will spin out. If Bowser, Wario, or Donkey Kong Hit you while you are, you'll spin even longer! When your done spinning, start the gas, and you wont move that slow.

Slide through the corners

Sent in by Code Hunter Slide through the corners. In most corners, keep the gas on as you take the corner and hold the R Button to slide through the turn. While sliding, your speed will not decrease even as you turn. To get the best time, learning this slide is important.

Advanced Sliding Technique

Sent in by Code Hunter Advanced Sliding Technique (Mini-Turbo) Start sliding as usual. (You can tell if you're sliding if white smoke rises from your wheels.) As you slide, steer in the direction opposite of your turn, then quickly steer back in the original direction. The smoke should turn yellow. Repeat the same sequence again, and if you succeed, the smoke will change to red. While doing this, you must keep pressing the A Button and the R Button. When the smoke becomes red, release the R Button. For a moment, your speed will increase a little. The trick is that after steering in the opposite direction, return to the original steering direction.

Turbo boost

Sent in by Matty Bear If you hold the A Button right after the yellow light, and yet before the green light, you will burst off of the Starting Line with a turbo boost. Be careful! If you hold the button too early, your tires will spin out and you will start even slower. Practice is the key.

Banana tip

Sent in by Code Hunter If you run over a Banana while turning, you will always slip. However, if you hit one, rapidly press the B Button when you are unbalanced, and sometimes you will not slip. If a music note appears over your racers head, you successfully avoided the Banana Slip.

Super Mushroom in Koopa Troopa Beach

Sent in by Code Hunter In Koopa Troopa Beach, if you can get a Super Mushroom; race to the ramp leading up to the hole in the side of the mountain, then use the Mushroom. You should have enough speed to get launched into the hole in the mountain. This is a really big shortcut that will put you in First Place for sure, but it takes a lot of practice to get it right.

Shortcuts

Sent in by Sam Swainhart at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! When you are racing in Wario Stadium you can make a shortcut! 1. After the start line try to get a good acceleration. 2. Before the forth small hill which is after the start line try to take a left. 3. At the top of the forth hill you should be vertical against the left wall. 4. Use the ( R ) button while hitting the wall and surly you gona jump a head of everybody else.
Sent in by Max In Wario stadium, right when you start off, go to the right of the track and point your kart at the left edge of the 4th bump. Speed up, and when you get to the peak of the bump, hit the jump button. (R Button) If you time it just right, and practice, you will jump over the wall and onto the next track, cutting your time by about 30 seconds
Sent in by tb1511@aol.com In Wario Stadium, don't get the super boost and right before you get to the first ramp, powerslide and jump over the wall. Or miss the first hill and jump the second then aim a little after the finish line and jump the wall. This gives you a seven second lap if fast enough.
Sent in by Andrew This shortcut can save you around 30 seconds per lap on the Rainbow Road. At the very beginning, just when you begin to go down the steep hill, turn all the way to your left so that you're directly facing another part of the road. If you use a mushroom and jump at the same time you can make it over the rail and all the way to that section of the road. It takes practice and perfect aiming, but if you can do it, you can skunk the other players and the best times.
Sent in by Brian Warnock In Wario Stadium, at the very start, go left to the sets of humps. Go straight towards the wall on top of the hump and right before you hit the wall press jump. if you do this right, you will be over the wall and be ahead of all the racers.
Sent in by Eric at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! On Rainbow Road there is a shortcut. Make sure that you have two players. Then when you start the race, have one player go back two full color patterns and next to the left rail so he is on red and the star is directly under him. Have the other person get a mushroom and line up right behind the other one( make sure this player is a light weight). Then have the light weight use the mushroom and jump over the other person. If done correctly the person should land in the circle that has the star. When the person is put back on the ground, it should show that the person has done a whole lap. Cross the finish line and a lap will be completed.
Sent in by Jason Williams In Royal Raceway, after starting the race go around the first two turns. You should be on a stretch of road with a small canal of water to your left and a tall mountain on the other side of the canal. Go down the road to the point where the mountain seems to recede from you a little. Turn your car in position to jump across the canal (Don't worry about the racers passing you. If you execute this trick right you will end up way ahead of them). Jump the canal {Turbo mushroom needed} and hit the hill at the point where it gradually turns away from the road (You'll be about midway between the 2nd and 3rd turns of the race). Fall into the water. If performed right Lakitu will pick you up and place you on the long ramp right before the giant jump, shaving plenty of seconds off your time!
Sent in by River In Choco Mountain, after the single bump, right before the stone wall, start a slide. at the end of the stone wall, turn to your left and jump. if you did it correctly, you should have gotten back on the road, and token a shortcut.
Sent in by Damon In Royal Raceway, when you're on the giant jump, steer left. Just as you fly off the jump, press jump. If all goes well, you'll sail to the left of the mountains, and land right before the finish line. In Frappes Snowland, just before you finish the first lap, at the bridge, swerve right just as you do, use a speed-mushroom. Be sure not to touch any of the road. Keep on driving right, until you cross the finish line. Then veer right. Lakito will pick you up, and put you right in front of the finish line. If you do this right, you will skip a lap!!!
Sent in by Cyborg Guy at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! In the Kalimari Desert if you get a Super Star turn left at the second railroad crossing. Turn on your star just before you enter the tunnel and you'll go onto the next lap and into a better position. This trick can only be used on the first or second lap of VS. Mode or Mario GP.
Sent in by Will Bowen On Royal Raceway, if you want to try a risky shortcut, you can make a death- defying leap to the left, off the top of the huge ramp. It's possible to land on the track but highly unlikely. Aim for the dirt patch just to the right of the water. If you hit the right spot (a small triangle next to the grass), you'll be placed on the track near the Item Boxes.
Sent in by Eric Bannon In Yoshi Valley, to take a major shortcut, take the first left in the maze. This does have some Spinys, so watch out.
Sent in by Riddler On the Desert Stage with the train and the tracks you can turn left at the second track crossing and follow the track to the tunnel. If you have a star and use it before the tunnel you will pass a lap some were in the middle of the tunnel! This is about a 10 second short cut that is great in 150cc to catch up to the 1st place guy!
Sent in by Justin Limbeck On time trial or GP when you are playing Frappe Snowland, from the starting line go backwards to the bridge and go next to the top right corner then turn around when you get to the end of the bridge. Aim forward so the guy that is in the cloud doesn't have a sign that says reverse. Then going forward aim at the right upper corner of the bridge. Be careful not to fall in the water. When going off the track you have to go diaginal from where you started on the bridge to where I told you to go (the right upper corner). When you are off the track you will see a tree when you are going diaginal. Go to the left side of it slightly. The guy will pick you up for going off the track to much. He will pick you up and put you down right behind the starting line if you did it right and you will be credited a full lap in about 7 to 20 seconds. You can do it three times and you can finish the race in less than a minute! This might be hard to do at first. I prefer to do it in time trial first. It works best with toad I think.
Sent in by Riddler at The Unofficial World of Nintendo!!! On the Royal Raceway you can make a awesome short cut! At the end of the Ramp you can turn your cart left and fly off to the beach and you can woop the Princess and get a 1:42 second time!
Sent in by Andrew McKown You can get a 5 and a half second lap and a time of 35 seconds in D.K.'s Jungle Parkway. You know that tunnel before the finish line? Well there is a dark spot in the left corner right before you come out of it. what you do is jump through it and angle just a little bit to far left so you come back into the cave before you hit the water. You must be precise for the trick to work. Now do it again and lakitu will say lap 2. Do it one more time and you should be on your third lap. Once you hit the ground get up as quickly as you can, cut the corner using your mushrooms. If you did it correctly you will get a 5 and a half second lap and a time of 35 seconds.
Sent in by Code Hunter Since there are multiple paths to follow in Yoshi's Valley, here is a cool shortcut. When you get to the entrance of the multiple paths (right after you pass by the two Yoshi flags) try hanging a sharp right, then the first left, follow the pathway to the right, under the archway, then go over the bridge. When you drop off the ledge, follow the arrow to get back on the correct pathway. In Yoshi's Valley, follow the course until you hit the mazey part. Immediately go left and stay left. The first part of the short-cut is to stay left and on the narrow part of the course. After managing to do that, you'll hit a little checkered ledge, and you'll see a big red and white sign on the left pointing right. This is the hard part. Accelerate as fast as possible and stay to the far right. As soon as the rail on the left side end, pull a hard left powerslide off the road. You'll continue the powerslide onto the upcoming road after you land, and if you do it right, you'll have shaved off at least 10 seconds or lead the pack. Of course, this one takes a lot of practice, but once mastered, it can't be beat. At Hydro Pond, after driving through about half the course, your driver will enter the ghost house. Upon entering, take a right, but not as sharp as normal and you'll pass by a wall on your left. Instead of aiming toward the bats, you'll aim slightly left and pass on the left side of the wooden pole. This might look like suicide, but jump over the edge of the star-shaped pool and you'll pass up that first-place player. At Rainbow Road, right at the start of the race there is a large hill from which each racer makes a slight jump. Often times, if you're aiming too far left or right your racer will fly off the course, which is not a short-cut. Just as the slope begins to descend, press JUMP and you'll fly much higher and farther than ever. This shaves seconds, and in the second and third laps, your racer should jump right over the heads of those difficult-to-see Chomps. For a bigger boost, turn to the left as soon as you jump. If you're quick enough you should land on the track about halfway through the lap!
